Talk Vossen on “Grounding language for machines: from Reading Machines to Reference Machines”
The Faculty Board of Humanities has asked each of the three departments to present themselves to the whole academic faculty this academic year. The Department of Language, Literature, and Communication will perform the kick-off with two presentations on new and ongoing research plans and ideas that connect to larger ambitions of the whole group. Hosted by the new program director, Dr. Petra Bos, and the new chair of the Department, Prof. dr. Diederik Oostdijk, the theme of the afternoon will be rebooting.
It is a playful allusion to the act of stopping and starting anew, which we all have to do at the beginning of a new academic year, but which also applies to our two speakers.
Prof. Piek Vossen (Computational Lexicology) will reflect on his Spinoza projects and will introduce his robot Pepper (which he has literally rebooted) and speak about his research ambitions for the next few years.
Dr. Erin La Cour (Literatures in English) will talk about teaching Creative Writing and about a research project on Graphic Medicine which she is writing, which connects to the field of Culture and Health which our Department hopes to extend further in the near future.
